our inaugural project has been a heartwarming journey to reunite Harry, Sally, and their elephant family at Knysna Elephant Park (KEP) in South Africa. This ambitious endeavor, which began in November 2023, is nearing its joyful conclusion, with the reunion projected for the end of April 2025. We will be notified soon as to the exact dates and if you’d like you can join our President Cody Wasial in seeing them be reunited in person in South Africa .
For eight long years, drought conditions forced Harry and part of his herd to live separately from Sally and the others. It was an executive decision that they be hosted on different land as to survive the water and food shortage over those years. As the drought finally ended, Wee Plant JOY stepped in to help KEP bring this elephant family back together.
A Hub for Elephant Care and Research
KEP is more than just a sanctuary; it’s a pioneering facility dedicated to caring for orphaned African elephants and advancing elephant research. Established in 1994, KEP has cared for over 40 elephants, providing them with a safe haven and contributing significantly to our understanding of these majestic creatures through the African Elephant Research Unit (AERU).
AERU focuses on improving elephant welfare and husbandry in semi-captive environments.
Research has led to changes in diet, feeding practices, and tourism interactions, ensuring better care for the elephants
So you can have confidence that not only have you impacted supporting these elephants come together , but you have also supported an amazing team of people who are ensuring the future for our Gentle Giants as well.
As we approach the reunion date, we need your help for the final preparations:
Elephant Snacks for the Journey: Contribute to our “Trunk-Full of Treats” fund to ensure Harry and his companions have plenty of nutritious snacks for their homecoming trip.
Last-Minute Logistics: Your donations will help cover any unexpected costs for trucks, veterinarians, and elephant handlers.
Celebration Supplies: Help us organize a proper welcome party for the reunited herd at KEP
